Earlier this year, I introduced my class to Oogway. Oogway is a wise turtle that is passionate about spelling. Every week, Oogway helps students learn their new spelling words.
This morning as students were silently reading, I felt a tiny tap on my back. Turning around, I see *Joseph holding out a small stuffed sea turtle in his hands.
“Ms. H. I brought you a baby Oogway. It was $1.00.”
My face beams.
“Joseph! How sweet! I can’t believe you bought this for me!”
Walking over to my chair by the smart board, Jesus introduces "Baby Oogway" to “Big Oogway" with his imaginative gestures.
This was my first present I have received as a student teacher. It was completely endearing. But more so, it opened my eyes to how even the smallest things, like bringing in a stuffed animal to help children learn how to spell, excites kids and can create meaningful relationships between teachers and students.
