Today, we got a new student. Martin was very shy stepping into the classroom.
In order to make him feel welcome, we spent 30 minutes sitting in a circle, playing games, and getting to know one another. Slowly, I started to see Martin warming up to the group. What was really amazing was seeing how the other students were so willing to help Martin throughout the day, familiarizing him with classroom rules, routines, and procedures.
Getting a new student at this time of the year is a definite challenge. Yet, taking the time to build that classroom community is the most important thing to ensure that Martin will succeed and grow. I’m glad he’s joined our “team” :)
